The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Isaias
Yahweh is salvation
From Hebrew Yesha'yahu, joining the verb for saving with a short form of the divine name.
Yesha'yahu → Ēsaias → Isaias → Isaías → Isaiah
How it traveled
The name belongs first to the Hebrew prophet whose book stands among the longest in the Bible. When Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated those scriptures into Greek, Yesha'yahu became Ēsaias; Latin took it as Isaias, and that is the spelling Jerome used in the Vulgate and English Catholics used for centuries.
Lian
depends on the language: 'lotus' or 'to join' in Chinese, and elsewhere a short form with no meaning of its own
In Mandarin, Lián romanizes several characters, most familiarly 莲 'lotus' and 连 'to link, to join'; the meaning lives in the character, not the spelling. In Dutch and Frisian, Lian is a clipped form of longer names such as Juliana and Liliana, and carries their meanings rather than one of its own. In modern Hebrew it appears as a short unisex given name. The US boy's usage, concentrated in Spanish-speaking regions, sits nearest that last pattern: a brief name given whole.
How it traveled
Lian has no single origin, and that is the honest and interesting part. In Chinese it is a long-standing element of given names and also a surname, romanized as Lián in pinyin and Lien in the older Wade-Giles system.

Out loud, and in short
Isaias
ee-sah-EE-as
That is the Spanish and Portuguese pronunciation, four syllables with the stress on the third. English speakers who read it as a version of Isaiah tend to say eye-ZAY-us, and both are heard in the US.
- Isa — The usual informal shortening in Spanish-speaking families; also stands alone as a given name in several languages.
- Izzy — English-language short form, shared with Isaiah, Isabel and Isabella; casual rather than formal.
- Zay — Informal, used mostly by younger speakers in English; shared with Isaiah and Xavier.
- Chai — Occasional playground clipping of the middle syllables; strictly informal.
Lian
LEE-ahn
Two syllables in Spanish, Hebrew and Dutch use, with the stress commonly on the first in American English. In Mandarin it is a single syllable, closer to 'lyen' with a rising tone. Expect to correct people who read it as Liam or Leon at a glance.
- Li — About the only shortening possible; used informally, and stands alone as a given name in Chinese.
- Lianito — A Spanish diminutive pattern applied to the name at home rather than a form used outside the family.

The trade-offs, name by name
Isaias
Strengths
- Works unchanged in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin, and is recognizable in English through its close cousin Isaiah.
- A documented written record stretching back to ancient translations of the Hebrew Bible — the spelling is old, not modern.
- Established short forms already in circulation: Isa, Izzy, Zay.
To consider
- Two live pronunciations compete in the US — the Spanish ee-sah-EE-as and the anglicized eye-ZAY-us. A child will spend some time correcting people, and may end up answering to both.
- The accent in Isaías tends to fall off in American paperwork, school rosters and email systems, which quietly nudges the pronunciation toward the English one.
- It sits close to Isaiah and to Isaí, and gets mistaken for both in writing. Worth deciding early which spelling goes on the birth certificate and holding to it.
Lian
Strengths
- Four letters, spelled the way it sounds once heard — no silent letters, no competing spellings to choose between.
- Already at home in Chinese, Dutch, Hebrew and Spanish, so it travels without becoming a different name.
- Short and finished as it is: no nickname is required, and none will be imposed.
To consider
- The pronunciation is not self-evident to American ears — LEE-ahn, lyen and lee-AHN are all real. Deciding on one early saves a lifetime of small corrections.
- Gender expectations shift by community: in the Netherlands and in much Chinese usage Lian reads as a girl's name, while the American record is a boy's. Worth knowing before someone assumes.
- It is climbing steadily, so a child born now will be far more likely to be the only Lian in a class than a child born a decade from now.
