II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Lian

depends on the language: 'lotus' or 'to join' in Chinese, and elsewhere a short form with no meaning of its own

In Mandarin, Lián romanizes several characters, most familiarly 莲 'lotus' and 连 'to link, to join'; the meaning lives in the character, not the spelling. In Dutch and Frisian, Lian is a clipped form of longer names such as Juliana and Liliana, and carries their meanings rather than one of its own. In modern Hebrew it appears as a short unisex given name. The US boy's usage, concentrated in Spanish-speaking regions, sits nearest that last pattern: a brief name given whole.

How it traveled

Lian has no single origin, and that is the honest and interesting part. In Chinese it is a long-standing element of given names and also a surname, romanized as Lián in pinyin and Lien in the older Wade-Giles system.

Wilder

from the word "wild" — either a dweller on wild, uncultivated land or "the wild one"

Two readings compete, and both lead back to the same root. English surname scholarship points to a topographic origin: someone who lived on or near untilled, uncleared ground. The German and Swiss surname Wilder is read instead as a nickname from the adjective wild, untamed. Neither has pushed the other out.

wilde (Old English: wild, untamed) → Wilde → Wilder (surname) → Wilder (given name)

How it traveled

For most of its life Wilder was a family name, not a first name — English in one line, German and Swiss in another, both from the word wild. It traveled to North America with both groups and became a well-established American surname, familiar from the bindings of books before it was ever called out to a child.

Out loud, and in short

Lian

LEE-ahn

Two syllables in Spanish, Hebrew and Dutch use, with the stress commonly on the first in American English. In Mandarin it is a single syllable, closer to 'lyen' with a rising tone. Expect to correct people who read it as Liam or Leon at a glance.

  • Li — About the only shortening possible; used informally, and stands alone as a given name in Chinese.
  • Lianito — A Spanish diminutive pattern applied to the name at home rather than a form used outside the family.

Wilder

WILE-der

Two syllables, stress on the first, rhyming with milder. English speakers read it correctly on sight because the word wilder is already in the language.

  • Will — The most natural short form, and a long-established given name in its own right.
  • Wil — Informal spelling that keeps the single l of the full name.
  • Wildy — Playground-style and family-only; not used formally.

The trade-offs, name by name

Lian

Strengths

  • Four letters, spelled the way it sounds once heard — no silent letters, no competing spellings to choose between.
  • Already at home in Chinese, Dutch, Hebrew and Spanish, so it travels without becoming a different name.
  • Short and finished as it is: no nickname is required, and none will be imposed.

To consider

  • The pronunciation is not self-evident to American ears — LEE-ahn, lyen and lee-AHN are all real. Deciding on one early saves a lifetime of small corrections.
  • Gender expectations shift by community: in the Netherlands and in much Chinese usage Lian reads as a girl's name, while the American record is a boy's. Worth knowing before someone assumes.
  • It is climbing steadily, so a child born now will be far more likely to be the only Lian in a class than a child born a decade from now.

Wilder

Strengths

  • Spelled exactly like an everyday English word, so it rarely needs repeating or clarifying.
  • Shortens cleanly to Will, a short form with centuries of use behind it.
  • A documented surname in both English and German-speaking countries, so it reads as a name rather than an invention.

To consider

  • It is the comparative form of wild, which invites the obvious joke — wilder than what? Most bearers meet that line early and stop noticing it.
  • Its wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it is a child. There are few adult Wilders to make the name feel age-neutral yet.
  • The variant spelling Wylder is also in use, so expect to be asked which one you mean when giving it over the phone.
