The story of Lucca
Lucca was a Roman colony, then an independent republic for five hundred years, and it kept its walls when other Tuscan cities pulled theirs down, which is why they are now a park running around the whole city. Italian place names have been used for children in the United States for two decades, alongside Siena, Verona and Milan. The double c distinguishes the city from the boys' name Luca, though in practice the two are used interchangeably in American records.

Not established
The city name is pre-Roman and its meaning is not settled: a Ligurian or Celtic word for a marshy place is the reading most often given, and a word for a sacred grove has been proposed. Separately, Luca with one c is the Italian form of Luke, meaning a man from Lucania, and the two names are constantly confused.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lucca went to 26 girls in 2025, but Luca and Luka are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 116, which makes it the 844th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,143 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 13,856 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 61,818 for Lucca itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kylia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lucca's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kylia climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kylia's path sketches the road Lucca is walking now.
Lucca sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Lucca is headed
Lucca should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- It names a real and unusually intact city that can be visited and shown.
- Two syllables ending on a vowel make it very easy for small children to say.
- It works in Italian, Spanish and English households without adjustment.
- Luca with one c is a boys' name in Italy and increasingly in America, so the child will be misfiled at times.
- Lucca and Luca are said almost identically, which guarantees written confusion.
- The city's meaning is genuinely unsettled, so any given for it is a guess.
