Alaia
Feminine · “joyful”
Alaia is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 17,682 girls against 17 boys since 1880.
Alaia belongs to a small family of names built almost entirely from vowels — three of them in four syllables' worth of sound, so the name opens rather than clicks shut. In Basque it is a genuine given name, drawn from the word for cheerful, and it arrived in American use alongside the whole Alaya–Aaliyah sound family that has been reshaping girls' names for a generation. It is familiar to the ear before it is familiar on paper.

The story of Alaia
The clearest documented line runs through Basque, where alai means cheerful and Alaia serves as a woman's given name; such names spread widely across the Basque Country and the rest of Spain in the decades after Franco, when regional naming was freely used again. In the United States the name took a different route, entering alongside Aaliyah, Alaya, Aleah and their many spellings, so that Alaia landed on American birth records as much for its sound as for its Basque pedigree. Its heaviest use sits in California, Texas and Florida — states where Spanish-language and multilingual naming has long shaped the charts. The surname Alaïa, carried by the Tunisian-French couturier, put the same letters in front of a very different audience.

'joyful, cheerful' in Basque — though the American name has a second road behind it
The Basque reading is solid: alai means cheerful or merry, and Alaia is the standard feminine given-name form, one of many Basque names that came back into wide use in Spain in the late twentieth century. But many American Alaias were named within the Arabic-rooted Aaliyah / Alia group, where the sense is 'high, exalted'. Both are real; which one applies depends on the family. Separately, alaia is also the Hawaiian word for a traditional thin wooden surfboard — a true coincidence of sound rather than a source.

Pronouncing Alaia
uh-LAY-uh
uh-LAY-uh is the usual American reading. Spanish and Basque speakers say it closer to ah-LAH-ee-ah, and some English speakers reach for ah-LIE-uh on first sight. All three are in real use, so a family generally picks one and repeats it.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alaia went to 2,318 girls in 2025, but Alaya, Alayah and Alaiya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 13 spellings went to 4,700, which makes it the 51st most-given girls’ name of the year — 66 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 342 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 693 for Alaia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Gwendolyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alaia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gwendolyn climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gwendolyn's path sketches the road Alaia is walking now.
Alaia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Alaia looks set to keep climbing gently, with roughly 16% more babies a year by 2030 if the current curve holds. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Short, all-vowel structure with no silent letters or consonant clusters — most readers can attempt it aloud on sight, even if they choose the wrong stress.
- Works across languages: a real Basque given name, easy for Spanish speakers, and at home in the Arabic-rooted Aaliyah sound family.
- Has genuine short forms already in circulation — Lala, Lai, Ali, Aya — rather than needing one invented.
- Strongly established in California, Texas and Florida, so it is a known quantity in much of the country rather than a novelty.
- The spelling competes with Alaya, Alayah, Alaia, Aliyah and Aaliyah, which sound similar or identical. Expect to spell it out often, and expect some paperwork to come back with a different version.
- Pronunciation is genuinely unsettled between uh-LAY-uh and ah-LIE-uh. Neither is wrong, which means correcting people is a lifelong small task rather than a one-time fix.
- The name's wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it right now is a child. There is no adult generation of Alaias yet to make it feel ordinary on a résumé — that comes with time.
- Alaïa is also a well-known fashion house, so the letters may ring a bell for some people in a commercial rather than personal way.
