Where it comes from

Our story of Alaiyah

Our story of Alaiyah is a story of an ending that spread past its source. Aaliyah entered wide American use in the 1990s and became one of the most-respelled names in the registers — Aliyah, Aleah, Aaliya, Alaiyah. Some of those families were reaching for the Arabic word for exalted; some were reaching for the sound. The record cannot separate them, and Alaiyah appears in the 2010s from both directions at once. The Arabic root behind the sound is real; the claim of descent is not documented, and it is fair to say so.

Meaningscholars disagree

exalted, sublime

The likeliest inherited route is the Arabic aliyah, the feminine of ali, 'high' or 'exalted' — a root that also gives one of the ninety-nine names of God. Whether this spelling descends from it or is an American coinage on the -aiyah ending is not documented, and both are in circulation.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Arabic root behind the sound has a genuinely elevated meaning.
  • Three syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
  • Aya is available as a short form that is a real name in two languages.
What to consider
  • The descent from the Arabic is claimed rather than documented for this spelling.
  • At least four spellings of the sound are in common use.
  • It will be respelled by other people constantly.
