The story of Mason
Stone building was skilled, organized work in medieval Europe, and the men who did it carried the trade name into their families when surnames fixed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Mason crossed to America early and was among the surnames taken up as first names in the twentieth century, becoming very widely used for boys after 2000. Girls have been given it throughout that period in much smaller numbers, and this page is written for both.

The Marvis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mason's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marvis climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marvis's path sketches the road Mason is walking now.

The trade-off
- An ordinary English word, so it is never misspelled or mispronounced.
- A concrete, documented occupational meaning rather than an abstraction.
- The sound is entirely familiar and has been for a generation.
- The name is read as a boy's by default, and a girl carrying it will correct that assumption often — on forms, in classrooms and in first meetings.
- It is very widely used, so the sound will be common in her year group even if her spelling of the name is not.
- The freemasonry association is unavoidable and will be joked about.
