The story of Aislinn
The aisling flourished in Munster Irish poetry from the late seventeenth century, when open political statement was dangerous and allegory was safer. The word became a girls' name in twentieth-century Ireland and spread through the English-speaking world. Aislinn appears in American records from the 1980s and is in current use.
Meaning
dream, vision
From the Irish aisling, 'dream' or 'vision'. In eighteenth-century Irish poetry the aisling was a genre: the poet sleeps, a beautiful woman appears, and she turns out to be Ireland lamenting her condition. The word is ordinary Irish and the meaning undisputed.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aislinn went to 131 girls in 2025, but Aislynn, Aislyn and Aislin and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 399, which makes it the 591st most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,001 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,028 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 12,269 for Aislinn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
