Where it comes from

The story of Lailah

Layla and Majnun is the great Persian and Arabic love story, retold by Nizami in 1188 — the model for a thousand years of doomed romance in the Islamic world. Eric Clapton's 1970 song brought the name to English-speaking audiences. Lailah appears in the American registers as one of several spellings and is in current use.

Meaning

night

From the Arabic layla and the Hebrew laylah, both meaning 'night' — the same Semitic root. In the Talmud, Lailah is named as the angel who watches over conception and teaches the unborn child the whole Torah, which it forgets at birth. The word is ordinary and undisputed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lailah went to 131 girls in 2025, but Layla, Laila and Laylah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 6,403, which makes it the 24th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,568 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 251 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 12,269 for Lailah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
