The story of Aislyn
The aisling poems of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had a sky-woman appear to the poet and lament Ireland's condition — political poetry disguised as a dream, which is what made it publishable. Aislinn became a given name in the twentieth century. Aislyn appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
dream, vision
From the Irish aisling, 'dream' or 'vision'. The aisling was a poetic form in which Ireland appears to the poet as a woman in a dream. The -lyn respelling is modern American. The Irish word is ordinary and the meaning undisputed.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aislyn went to 77 girls in 2025, but Aislinn, Aislynn and Aislin and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 399, which makes it the 591st most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,763 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,028 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 20,874 for Aislyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Oksana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. The trade-off
- That a genre of Irish political poetry is named for the word is a first-rate fact.
- The dream-vision meaning is concrete and genuinely attractive.
- Ash and Lyn are two short forms, both with large records.
- Aisling is the Irish spelling and Aislinn the commoner English one.
- Ashlyn is a separate name that sounds identical.
- It will be respelled by other people constantly.
