Gwendolyn
Feminine · “first part 'white”
Gwendolyn is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 124,385 girls against 333 boys since 1880.
Gwendolyn opens with a consonant pair that English barely uses — the soft Welsh gw — and then settles into three unhurried syllables. The name comes out of the Welsh material retold by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the twelfth century, and by the Victorian era it had been picked up by novelists and playwrights writing in English. It has an unbroken American record behind it and Gwen waiting inside it.

The story of Gwendolyn
The name belongs to Wales, built on gwen, one of the most productive elements in the Welsh naming stock. It reaches the wider record through Geoffrey of Monmouth, whose twelfth-century Latin histories and his Vita Merlini gave the forms Guendoloena and Gwendolen to readers far outside Wales. The nineteenth century revived it in English literature — George Eliot named the heroine of Daniel Deronda Gwendolen Harleth, and Oscar Wilde gave the name to Gwendolen Fairfax in The Importance of Being Earnest. The -lyn spelling is the form that took hold in the United States, where the name has been in continuous use ever since.
Meaningscholars disagree
first part 'white, fair, blessed'; second part unsettled
The first element is Welsh gwen, 'white, fair, holy, blessed' — that part is not in doubt and it appears in many Welsh names. The second element is where scholars part ways: one reading takes it from dolen, 'ring, link, bow', giving something like 'white ring'; another treats the ending as arising from the Latinized form Guendoloena used in medieval texts, in which case it carries no separate meaning of its own.

The Muriel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gwendolyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Muriel climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Muriel's path sketches the road Gwendolyn is walking now.

The trade-off
- Comes with Gwen already attached — a short form that has stood alone as a name for centuries, so the child has a formal and a casual option from day one.
- A documented line back to twelfth-century Welsh-Latin sources, plus a nineteenth-century literary record in English.
- Long, unbroken presence in American use rather than a recent arrival, so it is familiar to nearly everyone without being common in any classroom.
- Recognizable across Welsh, English and French in closely related forms.
- Three spellings circulate — Gwendolyn, Gwendoline, Gwendolen — so expect to spell it out routinely, and to see the other two come back at you on forms and envelopes.
- The name is strongly represented among older generations in the US, which means some people will hear it as belonging to their grandmother's cohort rather than to a small child. That reading fades as fewer people hold that association.
- The gw- opening is unfamiliar outside Welsh and can get flattened to Gwen-do-line or Wendolyn by speakers of other languages.
- Wendy, one of its short forms, is tied to a particular mid-century vogue and may arrive uninvited from adults who remember it well.
