Lukas
Masculine · “from Lucania”
Lukas is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 44,053 boys against 19 girls since 1880.
Lukas is the form the name took in German, Lithuanian and the Scandinavian languages, and it has carried the Gospel writer Luke's name through nearly two thousand years of European record-keeping. Said aloud it lands lightly — two even syllables, no consonant cluster to stumble over — and it arrives with Luke already built in for anyone who wants a shorter version.

Where it comes from
From Loukas to Lukas
The story of Lukas
The name begins as Greek Loukas, the name of the author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles, whose writings put it into circulation across the whole Greek-reading world. Latin turned it into Lucas, and from there it spread with the church into every European language, arriving in English as Luke by the Middle Ages. Lukas, with the k and the final s, is the German, Lithuanian, Czech, Swedish and Norwegian spelling, and it is the version most of continental Europe still uses. It reached American records in the twentieth century largely through that continental line, and has stayed steadily in use since.
Meaning
from Lucania, a region of southern Italy
Greek Loukas is a short form of Loukanos, the Latin Lucanus — 'man from Lucania'. The frequently repeated link to Latin lux, 'light', is a later popular association rather than the actual derivation, though it has been attached to the name for centuries.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dallas test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lukas's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dallas climbed just as high around 1995, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dallas's path sketches the road Lukas is walking now.
Lukas sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Instantly readable to English speakers, since Lucas and Luke are already familiar — no one has to be taught how to say it.
- Has an established short form, Luke, that works as a full name too, so the child has a formal and an informal option from day one.
- Documented continuously since the Greek of the New Testament, which is about as long a record as a name can have.
- Travels: recognized as the same name in German, Swedish, Lithuanian, Czech and Norwegian, and close to Lucas, Luca and Łukasz elsewhere.
- The main practical cost is the k. Lucas is much the more common American spelling, so Lukas will be written down wrong fairly often, on forms and in class lists, for life. Worth deciding in advance whether that correction bothers you.
- It will also be shortened to Luke by other people without being asked, which is fine if you like Luke and something to sit with if you don't.
- Familiar without being crowded — a Lukas is unlikely to share a classroom with another one, though he will meet plenty of boys named Lucas and Luke.
