The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Cash
Most likely a maker of cases or boxes, from Anglo-Norman French casse
Two documented readings compete for the surname. The English one is occupational: casse, a case or chest, from Latin capsa — a Cash made boxes. The Irish one takes it as an anglicization of Ó Caise, and in some families as a clipped form of Cassidy. Separately, the everyday word cash comes from the same Latin capsa, by way of the money-box, so the surname and the word are cousins rather than one being derived from the other.
capsa (Latin) → casse (Anglo-Norman French) → Cash (English and Irish surname) → Cash (given name)
How it traveled
The line begins with Latin capsa, a box or chest, which gave Anglo-Norman French casse and, in medieval England, a surname for the man who made them. Ireland contributed a second stream, where Cash served as an anglicization of Ó Caise and, in places, a shortening of Cassidy.
Lukas
from Lucania, a region of southern Italy
Greek Loukas is a short form of Loukanos, the Latin Lucanus — 'man from Lucania'. The frequently repeated link to Latin lux, 'light', is a later popular association rather than the actual derivation, though it has been attached to the name for centuries.
Loukas → Lucas → Luke → Lukas
How it traveled
The name begins as Greek Loukas, the name of the author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles, whose writings put it into circulation across the whole Greek-reading world. Latin turned it into Lucas, and from there it spread with the church into every European language, arriving in English as Luke by the Middle Ages.

Out loud, and in short
Cash
KASH
One syllable, rhyming with dash. No regional variation to speak of, and nothing in the spelling that trips up a first reading.
- Cash — Already a single syllable; it is normally used whole, with no everyday short form in circulation.
- Cashy — An affectionate family diminutive rather than a name used outside the house.
Lukas
LOO-kus
Stress on the first syllable. German and Scandinavian speakers give the second syllable a fuller vowel, closer to LOO-kahs; both are heard in the US, and neither is a correction of the other.
- Luke — The standard short form, and a long-established given name in its own right in English.
- Luca — Used as a familiar form, and also independently common as a given name, especially in Italy.
- Lukey — Informal, mostly used within families and in early childhood.
- Lu — Short and informal; also used for several other names beginning with Lu-.

The trade-offs, name by name
Cash
Strengths
- One syllable and one obvious pronunciation — it survives loudspeakers, phone calls and roll call without correction.
- Spelled as an ordinary English word, so most people write it right the first time they hear it.
- Works as the short form of a longer formal name, Cassius or Cassian, if parents want a full-length option on the birth certificate.
To consider
- It is also the plain English word for money, and that reading arrives first for almost everyone. Expect the jokes — about wallets, about registers — to be lifelong, if mostly good-natured.
- The Kash spelling is in real circulation, so a Cash will spend a certain amount of life confirming which one he is.
- The name's wave is recent enough that nearly everyone carrying it is still a child or a young person; there is no generation of grown Cashes yet to make it feel ordinary on an adult.
Lukas
Strengths
- Instantly readable to English speakers, since Lucas and Luke are already familiar — no one has to be taught how to say it.
- Has an established short form, Luke, that works as a full name too, so the child has a formal and an informal option from day one.
- Documented continuously since the Greek of the New Testament, which is about as long a record as a name can have.
To consider
- The main practical cost is the k. Lucas is much the more common American spelling, so Lukas will be written down wrong fairly often, on forms and in class lists, for life. Worth deciding in advance whether that correction bothers you.
- It will also be shortened to Luke by other people without being asked, which is fine if you like Luke and something to sit with if you don't.
- Familiar without being crowded — a Lukas is unlikely to share a classroom with another one, though he will meet plenty of boys named Lucas and Luke.
