Where each name comes from
Luciano
from Latin Lucius, ultimately from lux, "light"
Lucianus was a Roman derivative name formed from Lucius, so the strict sense is "of Lucius" — and Lucius itself traces to lux, "light". Both readings point the same way.
Lucius → Lucianus → Luciano
How it traveled
Lucius was one of the oldest and most-used Roman first names, and Lucianus grew out of it as a family derivative in the usual Latin way. The name traveled with Latin literature and with the early church: Lucian of Samosata, the Greek-writing satirist of the second century, is known in English by this name, and several early martyrs called Lucianus kept it in the calendar of saints.
Lukas
from Lucania, a region of southern Italy
Greek Loukas is a short form of Loukanos, the Latin Lucanus — 'man from Lucania'. The frequently repeated link to Latin lux, 'light', is a later popular association rather than the actual derivation, though it has been attached to the name for centuries.
Loukas → Lucas → Luke → Lukas
How it traveled
The name begins as Greek Loukas, the name of the author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles, whose writings put it into circulation across the whole Greek-reading world. Latin turned it into Lucas, and from there it spread with the church into every European language, arriving in English as Luke by the Middle Ages.

Out loud, and in short
Luciano
loo-CHAH-noh
That is the Italian reading, where -ci- is a "ch" sound. In Spanish the same spelling is loo-SYAH-noh. Both are correct for their language, so it is worth deciding which one your family will use and saying it the same way every time.
- Lucho — The standard informal short form in Spanish-speaking countries; also used for Luis, so context does the sorting.
- Luca — Used informally in English-speaking settings, though Luca is a separate given name in its own right in Italy.
- Nano — An Argentine and wider Spanish-American nickname pattern for names ending in -ano; strictly informal, family and friends.
- Lu — Short, casual, works in both English and Spanish; unisex.
- Also Ciano.
Lukas
LOO-kus
Stress on the first syllable. German and Scandinavian speakers give the second syllable a fuller vowel, closer to LOO-kahs; both are heard in the US, and neither is a correction of the other.
- Luke — The standard short form, and a long-established given name in its own right in English.
- Luca — Used as a familiar form, and also independently common as a given name, especially in Italy.
- Lukey — Informal, mostly used within families and in early childhood.
- Lu — Short and informal; also used for several other names beginning with Lu-.

The trade-offs, name by name
Luciano
Strengths
- Reads correctly in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese with no respelling, and has close cousins in French, English, Romanian and Polish.
- A documented line back to Roman Lucius, in continuous use through the saints' calendar and into modern Romance languages.
- Several long-established short forms already in real use — Lucho in Spanish, Ciano in Italian — so a nickname does not have to be invented.
To consider
- The Italian "loo-CHAH-noh" and the Spanish "loo-SYAH-noh" are both right, and English speakers meeting the name cold sometimes try "loo-see-AH-noh". Expect to correct it now and then, and expect the correction to be easy.
- Nearby spellings — Lucciano, Luciyano — and nearby names like Lucian and Luca mean forms will occasionally get swapped on paperwork.
- Its American wave is recent rather than long-standing, so most people who carry it here are still young. That means little competition in a classroom, and few adult namesakes to point to.
Lukas
Strengths
- Instantly readable to English speakers, since Lucas and Luke are already familiar — no one has to be taught how to say it.
- Has an established short form, Luke, that works as a full name too, so the child has a formal and an informal option from day one.
- Documented continuously since the Greek of the New Testament, which is about as long a record as a name can have.
To consider
- The main practical cost is the k. Lucas is much the more common American spelling, so Lukas will be written down wrong fairly often, on forms and in class lists, for life. Worth deciding in advance whether that correction bothers you.
- It will also be shortened to Luke by other people without being asked, which is fine if you like Luke and something to sit with if you don't.
- Familiar without being crowded — a Lukas is unlikely to share a classroom with another one, though he will meet plenty of boys named Lucas and Luke.
