Italian names Americans adore

Before the names

Every name below is Italian by root and American by birth certificate, shown with its live rank.

The headline numbers are remarkable: Luca stands at #14, the highest rank in its 110-year American record, with Enzo at #72 and Matteo climbing behind — all three still rising. On the girls' side Isabella has already been the #1 name in the country (2009-2010), and Sofia, Mia and Gianna have all touched the top-15 within recent memory.

The records hold an earlier Italian-American chapter, and it reads differently. The Ellis Island generation's names — Salvatore, Angelo, Rocco, Vincenzo — peaked in the 1910s and 20s, then spent most of a century in quiet, steady use, never fading out entirely. Vincenzo's current rank, quietly, is the best in its whole record.

What separates the two chapters: today's wave leads with names that travel without translation. Luca, Enzo, Matteo and Leonardo work in any accent, and the girls' leaders — Valentina, Lucia and Francesca, all at their all-time American highs this year — carry the full Italian sound into mainstream use rather than an anglicized compromise.

Read the directions before you fall in love: the biggest girls' names have crested — Gianna peaked in 2020, Mia in 2024, Isabella back in 2009 — while Valentina, Lucia and Francesca are the ones still climbing. Both halves are beautiful; they are simply at different points on the wave, and the ranks say which.
