Emiliana
Feminine
Emiliana carries a Roman family name across two thousand years and several languages, arriving in English almost unchanged from Italian and Spanish. It is the long form of the Emilia and Emily everyone already knows, with two extra syllables that give it a rolling, unhurried sound. In the United States it is heard most in states with deep Spanish- and Italian-speaking roots.

From Aemilius to Emiliana
The story of Emiliana
Aemilius was the name of one of Rome's patrician clans, and its adjectival forms spread everywhere the family did: the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus laid the Via Aemilia across northern Italy in the second century BC, and the region of Emilia still carries his name. In the sixth century, Pope Gregory the Great wrote of his own aunt Aemiliana, which carried the name into Christian use. From there it settled into Italian and Spanish as Emiliana, the feminine partner of Emiliano, and traveled with those languages to the Americas. English received the shorter Emily centuries ago; the full Latin-shaped form arrived much later and much more quietly.
Meaningscholars disagree
from the Roman family name Aemilius, usually read as "rival" or "emulating"
The standard reading links Aemilius to Latin aemulus, "rival, striving to equal." But Aemilius was an old Roman clan name, and clan names of that age often predate Latin itself — a number of scholars treat its origin as Etruscan or otherwise unrecoverable. Emiliana is the feminine of Aemilianus, "belonging to the Aemilii."

Pronouncing Emiliana
eh-mee-lee-AH-nah
That is the Italian and Spanish pronunciation. English speakers often shift to em-uh-lee-AN-uh, with a flat A in the stressed syllable. Both are in real use, and a family that prefers one will spend a little time correcting the other.

The Lidia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Emiliana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lidia climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lidia's path sketches the road Emiliana is walking now.
Emiliana is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese with no respelling, which matters in a bilingual family.
- Built on the Emily and Emilia everyone already recognizes, so the root is familiar even where the full form is not.
- Offers an unusual number of ready-made short forms — Emi, Emilia, Mila, Ana, Lia — so a child has real choice.
- A documented record stretching back to a Roman clan name, with a formal Latin form and modern forms in five languages.
- Five syllables and a vowel-heavy spelling mean it will be mis-heard as Emiliana, Emilianna, Emeliana or simply Emilia. Most bearers end up spelling it aloud fairly often.
- Emilia and Emily are far more familiar in English, and the name will sometimes be shortened to them by people who assume that is what was meant.
- The name is very rare here and the wave carrying it is recent, so an Emiliana is likely to be the only one wherever she goes — an advantage or a small burden depending on the child.
- Its natural pronunciation is Italian and Spanish; in mostly English-speaking settings the vowels tend to flatten, and families differ on whether to correct it.
