Elouise
Feminine
Elouise is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 11,398 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Elouise is the English spelling of a name that reached us through medieval France, where Héloïse belonged to one of the twelfth century's most famous letter-writers. The extra o gives it a longer, rounder middle than Eloise, and pulls it visibly toward Louise. Said aloud it moves in three unhurried beats and ends on a soft z.

The story of Elouise
The name arrives in English from French Héloïse, borne in the twelfth century by Héloïse d'Argenteuil, the scholar whose correspondence with Peter Abelard was read and copied for centuries afterward. English speakers dropped the accents to make Eloise, and somewhere along the way a second o crept in, giving a spelling that matches how the middle syllable actually sounds and nods to the familiar Louise. Elouise has been on American records since the late nineteenth century, most heavily during the interwar decades, and has been quietly rising again in recent years. Its strongest ground has been Texas, Ohio and California.

'healthy and wide' from Germanic roots, or a form shaped by Louise
The older line traces Héloïse to Germanic Helewidis, from hail 'hale, healthy, whole' and wid 'wide'. The competing reading treats the name as a variant of Louise, feminine of Louis, from Germanic elements meaning 'famous' and 'warrior'. The -ou- spelling in Elouise leans toward that second reading, whatever the deeper origin turns out to be.

Pronouncing Elouise
EL-oo-EEZ
Three syllables, with the weight on the first and last. Some families say el-oh-EEZ; the French Héloïse puts more stress on the final syllable. Any of these is standard, so it helps to pick one and say it the same way at introductions.

The Oleta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elouise's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oleta climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oleta's path sketches the road Elouise is walking now.
Elouise is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Instantly readable to anyone who knows Eloise, so it never needs to be spelled out letter by letter to be understood.
- A deep bench of short forms — Ellie, Elle, Lou, Elsie — that suit every stage from playground to office.
- On American records since the nineteenth century, so it comes with a long unbroken history rather than a recent invention.
- Has close relatives in French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, which makes it travel well.
- Uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- The default spelling in most people's heads is Eloise, without the second o. Expect a lifetime of gentle corrections on forms and email addresses, and of having to say 'E-L-O-U'.
- Stress placement varies — EL-oo-eez and el-oh-EEZ both circulate — so introductions may need repeating before people settle on one.
- It is still strongly represented among much older generations, which reads as charmingly vintage to some ears and simply old-fashioned to others. That gap is narrowing as the name climbs again.
