Where it comes from

The story of Lidia

Lydia in Acts 16 is a dealer in purple cloth at Philippi and the first recorded European convert to Christianity — a businesswoman who houses Paul's mission. The name spread through Christian Europe, and Spanish, Italian, Polish and Russian all use Lidia. Spanish-speaking families brought it to America, where it is in current use.

Meaning

woman from Lydia

From Lydia, the region of western Asia Minor. Its own name is pre-Greek and unrecovered. Lydia struck the first standardized coins around 600 BC, and its last king Croesus became the byword for wealth. The name means simply a woman from there.

About 1 girl in 566 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 12,176 for Lidia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The invention of coinage happened in the place it names, which is real weight.
  • A woman running her own business in Acts carries it.
  • It is standard in Spanish, Italian, Polish and Russian without change.
What to consider
  • Lydia is the form English speakers will assume.
  • The first vowel differs between the Spanish and English readings.
  • The place name's own meaning is unrecovered.
