The saint attached to this name is the one people pray to when they have lost their keys, and the reason is a stolen book. A novice made off with his psalter, was reportedly frightened into bringing it back, and the story of the recovered object attached itself to him so firmly that it has outlasted everything else he did.

The story of Antonio
One of the composers who carried it wrote several hundred concertos, ran a music school for orphaned girls in Venice for most of his working life, was ordained a priest and stopped saying mass within a year, and died in Vienna owing money and was buried in a hospital ground with no marker. His music went out of print and stayed out for two centuries. The revival began in the nineteen-twenties when a stack of his manuscripts turned up in a monastery collection being valued for sale, and the concertos everyone now knows were unheard by anybody alive at the time.

The Allen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Antonio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Allen climbed just as high around 1940, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Allen's path sketches the road Antonio is walking now.
Antonio peaked long ago yet still holds steady — names that survive their own wave usually settle into quiet, durable classics.

The trade-off
- It is recognized instantly across southern Europe and the Americas.
- It has established short forms in three languages.
- The spelling and the sound agree completely in all of them.
- No meaning can be given, because the Roman root has none that survives.
- It is common enough that a child may not be the only one nearby.
- The record holds girls as well, and the girl is much the smaller side.
