Serafina
Feminine · “burning one”
Serafina comes from the seraphim, the burning six-winged angels of Isaiah's vision, and it has been an Italian and Spanish name for centuries — worn by Fina of San Gimignano, the thirteenth-century Tuscan girl venerated as Santa Serafina. Said aloud it opens softly and lands on that long FEE, four syllables that never feel crowded. In the US it has the deepest roots in New York, New Jersey and California, where Italian families carried it over.

The story of Serafina
The word behind the name is Hebrew: seraphim, the burning ones who appear in Isaiah's vision of the temple. Greek and Latin scripture kept the word intact, and by the Middle Ages Christian Europe was using it as a personal name — Seraphinus for men, Seraphina for women — with Italy and Spain settling on the f spelling, Serafina. Fina of San Gimignano, honored in Tuscany since the thirteenth century, was baptized Serafina, and her shortened name is still given in that region. The name reached American records through Italian and Hispanic families and has spent most of its time here in the same handful of states.

The trade-off
- Works unchanged in Italian, Spanish, Polish and Portuguese, with close cousins in French and Russian — useful in a bilingual or multinational family.
- A documented history running from scripture through medieval Latin to modern Italy, without a break.
- Two long-established short forms, Sera and Fina, one of which is a real name in its own right.
- Currently gaining ground rather than fading, so it reads as new without being invented.
- Seraphina, with ph, is the better-known spelling in English. Expect to answer "with an f or a ph?" fairly often, and to see the ph version come back on forms and school lists.
- Rare enough that a child is unlikely to meet another — pleasant for some families, and something a shy kid may have to spell out repeatedly.
- The angelic meaning is fairly overt, which suits some families and feels like a lot to carry for others.
- Four syllables sit awkwardly against very long surnames; it helps to say the full name aloud a few times before deciding.
