Yamileth
Feminine · “beautiful”
Yamileth belongs to one of the great traveling families of names: the Arabic root jamīl, "beautiful", which crossed into Spanish and then into the Americas, where it picked up the -eth ending that Spanish-speaking families in Mexico and Central America have long favored. Said aloud it climbs to the last syllable — yah-mee-LETH — and shortens, almost everywhere it is used, to Yami.

The story of Yamileth
The root is Arabic: jamīl, beautiful, whose feminine form Jamila has been in use across the Arabic-speaking world for centuries. Spanish absorbed a great many Arabic words and names during the long Muslim presence in Iberia, and the j sound came through as a y — hence Yamila and Yamile. In Latin America, particularly in Mexico and Central America, those forms were extended with a final -eth, a naming habit visible in a whole cluster of Spanish-American girls' names. Yamileth reached United States records in the second half of the twentieth century, carried by Spanish-speaking families, and has kept a quiet, unbroken place there since.
Meaning
beautiful
The meaning comes from Arabic jamīl ("beautiful"), feminine jamīla. Yamileth is the Spanish-American reshaping of Yamila/Yamile, with the -eth ending that also produced names like Nayeleth and Lisbeth in Latin American usage.

Pronouncing Yamileth
yah-mee-LETH
Stress lands on the final syllable. In most Latin American Spanish the closing -th is said as a plain t, so yah-mee-LET is equally correct and probably what an English speaker will hear.

The Ricki test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yamileth's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ricki climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ricki's path sketches the road Yamileth is walking now.
Yamileth sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One established short form, Yami, already in use wherever the name is — no need to invent a nickname.
- Spelled the way it sounds under Spanish phonics: every letter does a job.
- Part of a documented name family found in Arabic, Spanish, French, Turkish and Persian, so relatives of the name exist almost anywhere.
- Rare enough in US records that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- English speakers tend to stumble on the ending. Expect Yamilet, Yamilette and Jamileth on forms and roll calls, and expect to say the name twice on first meeting.
- The final -th invites an English th sound, which is not how the name is said in Spanish. Families often settle on one pronunciation for home and accept the other outside it.
- The name's presence in US records is recent, so nearly everyone carrying it is still young — there is no older generation of Yamileths for a child to be named after, or to be mistaken for.
- It is closely tied to Spanish-speaking communities, which is a strength inside them and simply an introduction to make outside them.
