Mia
Feminine · “Either a short form of Maria”
Mia is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 310,219 girls against 391 boys since 1880.
Mia is one of those names that started life as an affectionate short form — the Scandinavian and German everyday version of Maria — and then quietly stopped needing the long form at all. Two syllables, both open, nothing in the mouth to trip over: MEE-uh. It travels well, appearing on birth registers in several countries at once, which is rare for a name this small.
How old is the name Mia?
Mia first appears in US birth records in 1933 — 92 years ago. The typical Mia is a kid of about 12 — this name's wave is very recent. About 307,000 people named Mia are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Mia
The name reaches English through northern Europe rather than directly from Latin. Maria has been shortened to Mia in Scandinavian and German-speaking households for generations, and it was there that the short form hardened into a name given on its own, without the longer version behind it. English-speaking countries picked it up much later, and its spread has been broad rather than local — it charts today in Canada, England and Wales, Scotland and France as well as the United States. The Italian and Spanish possessive mia runs alongside as a second, independent source of the same spelling.
Meaningscholars disagree
Either a short form of Maria, or the Italian word for "mine"
The older and better-documented road is through Maria: Mia is a long-established pet form of Maria in Danish, Swedish and German, and Maria's own meaning is itself unsettled, with "beloved", "bitter" and "sea of sorrow" all proposed for the underlying Hebrew Miryam. Separately, mia is simply the Italian and Spanish word for "mine" (as in the Italian mia — feminine possessive), and plenty of families choose it for that reading. Both are real; neither cancels the other.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Sandra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sandra climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sandra's path sketches the road Mia is walking now.

The trade-off
- Three letters, one obvious spelling, and a pronunciation that survives being read aloud by strangers.
- Established in Scandinavian, German, Italian and English-speaking use, so it crosses borders without being reshaped.
- Needs no nickname, but accepts Mimi if a family wants one — and doubles as the short form for Maria, Amelia or Emilia.
- Carried by public figures in sport, film and government, including a serving head of government in the Caribbean.
- It is one of the most-given girls' names in the country right now, and the wave is recent — a Mia will likely meet other Mias in school rather than among adults.
- The sound sits close to Mila, Mira, Maya and Mya, and the -ia ending puts it in a very crowded neighborhood, so mishearings are more likely than misspellings.
- Because the name is short and widely shared, an internet search on it alone returns bearers from very different fields, adult-film performers among them.
- There is no formal long version on the birth certificate unless you register Maria or Amelia instead — worth a thought if you like having a dressier option in reserve.
