Gianna
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Gianna is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 110,315 girls against 73 boys since 1880.
Gianna is the Italian short form of Giovanna, the feminine of Giovanni — the same ancient name that gave English Jane, Joan and Joanna. It comes out of the mouth in two soft syllables that start with the same sound as "jam" and end on an open vowel, and it has been current in Italy for centuries before it ever appeared in American records. It is a name with a very long line behind it and a very recent wave in the United States.
How old is the name Gianna?

The story of Gianna
The root is Hebrew Yochanan, carried into Greek as Ioannes and Ioanna by the translators and writers of the Bible, then into Latin as Iohannes and Iohanna. Italian turned the masculine into Giovanni and the feminine into Giovanna, and everyday speech clipped both: Gianni for men, Gianna for women. Italian families brought the short form to the United States, where it took hold on its own rather than as a nickname. Its strongest showing today is in states with large and long-settled Italian-American populations alongside big Spanish-speaking ones, and it charts in Canada too.

The Cheryl test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gianna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cheryl climbed just as high around 1958, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cheryl's path sketches the road Gianna is walking now.

Where Gianna is headed
Gianna should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Belongs to one of the oldest continuously used name families in Europe, alongside Jane, Joan, Joanna, Jeanne and Juana.
- Two clear short forms already in general use — Gia and Gigi — plus the full name for formal settings.
- Short, two or three syllables, with no silent letters and no consonant clusters to trip over.
- Recognizable across Italian, Spanish and English-speaking communities, and established in Canada as well as the US.
- Two pronunciations circulate — jee-AH-nuh and JAH-nuh — and she will likely correct people in both directions for life.
- Spelling is easy to hear wrong: Giana, Jiana, Gianna and Johanna all sound close enough to be guessed at.
- The American wave is very recent, so the name reads as contemporary and its bearers skew strongly toward children rather than adults.
