Lainey
Feminine · “A short form of Elaine”
Lainey is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 28,421 girls against 10 boys since 1880.
Lainey began as the household short form of Elaine — the name Thomas Malory gave to Elaine of Astolat in the fifteenth century, and Tennyson revived in his Idylls of the King. It reads exactly as it sounds: two beats, a bright open first syllable, an easy -ee to land on. What families once used only at the kitchen table is now written on birth certificates in its own right.

Where it comes from
From Helenē to Lainey
The story of Lainey
The line runs from Greek Helenē through Latin Helena into French, where it became Hélène and, in the older Norman romances, Elaine. English took Elaine in from Arthurian literature and kept it: Malory's Elaine of Astolat, and later the same figure in Tennyson's Victorian retelling, which sent the name through English-speaking nurseries in the nineteenth century. Lainey is the affectionate clipping of that Elaine, and it followed the same road many pet forms have traveled — spoken for generations before anyone thought to register it. It now appears on American and Canadian records as a full given name rather than a nickname.
Meaningscholars disagree
A short form of Elaine, which descends from Greek Helen — most often read as 'torch' or 'shining light'
Helen's meaning has never been settled. One reading ties it to Greek helenē, 'torch'; another links it to selēnē, 'moon'. A third position holds that Helen is older than Greek itself, in which case the original sense cannot be recovered. Lainey inherits all of that, at one remove.

The Maria test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lainey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maria climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maria's path sketches the road Lainey is walking now.
Lainey is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on sight for English speakers — one obvious pronunciation, no coaching needed at roll call or on the phone.
- Comes with a ready-made formal counterpart in Elaine, if a longer name is ever wanted for paperwork.
- Sits in a documented line reaching back through Elaine and Hélène to Greek Helen, so a modern-sounding name carries a long record.
- Two syllables ending in an -ee sound, which sits comfortably in front of most surnames.
- The sound has several competing spellings — Laney, Lainie, Laine, Layne — so expect to spell it out fairly often, especially over the phone.
- It is rising quickly at the moment. A name climbing this fast usually sounds more familiar a decade from now than it does today.
- Almost everyone carrying it is still a child, so for a while yet the name will read as distinctly young rather than as a name of any age.
- It began life as a pet form, and keeps a warm, informal register. That suits many families; if you want a stately option in reserve, Elaine is right there.
