Gianni is the Italian household form of Giovanni — the same name that English turned into John, worn down over centuries of daily use into two easy syllables. Dante put a Gianni in the Inferno, and Puccini built a comic one-act opera around him in 1918. It is a name with a long pedigree that still sounds light and quick in the mouth.

The story of Gianni
The name begins as Hebrew Yochanan, passes into Greek as Iōannēs and Latin as Ioannes, and arrives in Italian as Giovanni — one of the most-used men's names in Italy for many centuries. Everyday Italian speech clipped it to Gianni, the way English speech clipped John to Johnny, and the short form eventually stood on its own on birth certificates. Dante gave the name to a Florentine trickster in the Inferno, and Puccini turned that character into the opera Gianni Schicchi in 1918. In the United States it appears with Italian-American families first and has since spread well beyond them, strongest today in California, Texas and Florida.

Pronouncing Gianni
JAH-nee
In Italian, 'gi' before a vowel makes a soft j sound and the i is not spoken separately — so it is two syllables, not three. Some American speakers say jee-AH-nee, and both are heard.

The Keenan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gianni's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Keenan climbed just as high around 1997, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Keenan's path sketches the road Gianni is walking now.
Gianni sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Traces an unbroken line back to Hebrew Yochanan, sharing an origin with John, Juan, Jean and Ivan — a familiar name family in almost any language.
- Short, two syllables, and easy to say once the Italian 'gi' is explained; no shortening required.
- Recognizable across Italy and much of Europe as the everyday form of Giovanni, so it travels without translation.
- Uncommon enough in American classrooms that a child is unlikely to share it, while the spelling is one most people have seen.
- The spelling invites two readings — JAH-nee and jee-AH-nee — and a lifetime of small corrections. Double-n and the silent i also get lost in dictation and email.
- In Italian, Gianni is a men's name and Gianna is its feminine counterpart. A girl named Gianni in the US will often be assumed to be a Gianna, or to have a boy's name, which is worth deciding how you'll answer.
- It carries a clear Italian signal. If that matches your family, it's a feature; if not, expect the occasional question about heritage.
- The name's American wave is recent, so most people carrying it are still young — there are few adult Giannis around to make it feel established.
