Kobe
Masculine · “Two readings”
Kobe is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 22,513 boys against 613 girls since 1880. See Kobe as a girl name
Kobe arrives in American records by two roads that never quite met: the Japanese port city of Kōbe, and Flemish nurseries, where Kobe has long been the everyday short form of Jacob. Both give the same two beats and the same open ending, the one Toby and Cody share. It is a name that spent the last few decades on basketball courts and is now settling into ordinary use.

The story of Kobe
In Flanders and the Netherlands, Kobe has been in use for generations as a clipped form of Jacob or Jacobus, alongside Kobus and Koos, and it remains a normal Belgian boy's name today. The American story is separate and much shorter: the basketball player Kobe Bryant was named, as his family has told it, after the Kobe beef his father saw on a restaurant menu — beef named for the Japanese port city of Kōbe. The name appeared in US birth records before he was famous, but it climbed with his career and has been easing back since. Two unrelated sources, one spelling, and no way to tell them apart on paper.

Two readings, depending on the road: 'god's door' (the Japanese city) or, via Jacob, 'he follows after'
The Japanese city Kōbe is written with characters meaning 'god' and 'door/household', from the households that served the Ikuta Shrine — that reading is settled for the place. The Flemish and Dutch Kobe is instead a short form of Jacob, from Hebrew Yaʿaqov, traditionally read as 'he follows after' or 'supplanter', tied to the word for heel. Which meaning applies is a matter of which line a family is following.

Two syllables, stress on the first. The Japanese city is closer to KOH-beh, with an even second beat, so anyone who knows the place may say it that way at first.

The Burton test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kobe's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Burton climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Burton's path sketches the road Kobe is walking now.
Kobe sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Kobe is headed
Kobe should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, four letters, and spelled the way it sounds for an English reader — little correcting needed.
- Already short, so it needs no nickname to work on a playground or a roster.
- Used independently as a real given name in Belgium and the Netherlands, which gives it footing outside the US.
- Widely recognized worldwide, so it is rarely met with a blank look.
- For most people the name still points straight to one basketball player, and his death in 2020 gave it a memorial weight. Expect the association to be spoken aloud often — sometimes warmly, sometimes as an assumption about why you chose it.
- Kobe beef is the other common association, and some Kobes field a joke about it more than once.
- Coby, Kobi and Kobie all exist, so the spelling will occasionally need confirming even though the pronunciation does not.
- A child with this name will most likely be the only one in the class — noticeable, but not so unfamiliar that anyone has to be told twice.
