Alessia
Feminine · “defender”
Alessia is the Italian feminine form of Alessio, which reaches back through Latin to the Greek Alexios — a name carried by Byzantine emperors in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Four syllables that all open outward, with the double s giving the middle of the word a little push: ah-LESS-ee-ah. It arrived in American records in the second half of the twentieth century and has been climbing steadily since.

Where it comes from
From alexein (Greek: to defend) to Alessia
The story of Alessia
The root is Greek: alexein, to defend, which produced the personal name Alexios. It traveled into Italian as Alessio, losing the Greek -x- to the softer double s that Italian prefers, and Alessia is its feminine counterpart. The name has long been at home across Italy, where the short form Ale does duty for both Alessia and Alessio, and it spread into Romanian, Spanish and French in closely related spellings. In the United States its rise tracks with a broader American appetite for Italian given names kept in their original spelling rather than translated.

The Perla test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. The trade-off
- The meaning is settled and easy to give in three words: defender, helper.
- Close cousins Alexis, Alexia and Alexandra are already familiar to English speakers, so the name is rarely heard as unplaceable.
- Spelled as it is in Italian, with recognized forms in Romanian, Spanish, French and German — it travels without needing to change.
- Established short forms exist at both ends of the word: Ale in Italian, Lessi or Ally in English.
- Strongest representation in California, New York and Texas, so it is not tied to one region.
- It sits in a crowded neighborhood of similar spellings — Alicia, Alesia, Alexia, Alessa — and will be misheard or misspelled fairly often. A quick 'Alessia, with a double s' becomes routine.
- Two pronunciations compete: the Italian ah-LESS-ee-ah and an Anglicized uh-LEH-shuh. Both are used in the US, so it is worth deciding early which one your family will correct people to.
- The name is on a clear upward path, so a child born now may meet more Alessias as a teenager than she does in kindergarten — still nowhere near the crowd around the top-ten names.
- Almost everyone carrying it in the US today is young, which means adult Alessias are still uncommon here and the name may read as a children's name for a while yet.
