The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Alessia
defender, helper
From the Greek verb alexein, 'to defend, to ward off' — the same root behind Alexander, Alexandra and Alexis.
alexein (Greek: to defend) → Alexios → Alessio → Alessia
How it traveled
The root is Greek: alexein, to defend, which produced the personal name Alexios. It traveled into Italian as Alessio, losing the Greek -x- to the softer double s that Italian prefers, and Alessia is its feminine counterpart.
Navy
fleet of ships; also the deep blue color
The word came into English from Old French navie, from Latin navis, 'ship'. The color name is secondary — 'navy blue' was named for the dark blue worn by the British Royal Navy, and it is the color that most modern parents have in mind.
navis (Latin, 'ship') → navie (Old French, 'fleet') → navy
How it traveled
The word traveled the ordinary route into English: Latin navis, 'ship', gave Old French navie, a fleet of ships, which English took up in the Middle Ages. By the nineteenth century the naval uniform had lent its dark blue to the language, and 'navy' became a color as well as an institution.

Out loud, and in short
Alessia
ah-LESS-ee-ah
That is the Italian pronunciation, and the most common one in the US. Some English speakers reduce it to uh-LEH-shuh, closer to Alicia, so expect to state your preference more than once.
- Ale — The standard Italian short form, said AH-leh; it serves Alessia and Alessio alike and stays informal.
- Lessi — Informal English-language clipping of the second half; also spelled Lessie.
- Ally — Informal, and shared with Allison, Alexandra and Alice — it stands alone as a given name too.
- Sia — Informal short form taken from the ending; also exists independently as a name.
- Also Essie.
Navy
NAY-vee
Stress on the first syllable, exactly like the word. There is no competing pronunciation, in the US or elsewhere in the English-speaking world.
- Nav — Informal clipping; used within families rather than as a name in its own right.
- Vee — Informal; a sound-based shortening, the same one that serves Vivian and Everly.

The trade-offs, name by name
Alessia
Strengths
- The meaning is settled and easy to give in three words: defender, helper.
- Close cousins Alexis, Alexia and Alexandra are already familiar to English speakers, so the name is rarely heard as unplaceable.
- Spelled as it is in Italian, with recognized forms in Romanian, Spanish, French and German — it travels without needing to change.
To consider
- It sits in a crowded neighborhood of similar spellings — Alicia, Alesia, Alexia, Alessa — and will be misheard or misspelled fairly often. A quick 'Alessia, with a double s' becomes routine.
- Two pronunciations compete: the Italian ah-LESS-ee-ah and an Anglicized uh-LEH-shuh. Both are used in the US, so it is worth deciding early which one your family will correct people to.
- The name is on a clear upward path, so a child born now may meet more Alessias as a teenager than she does in kindergarten — still nowhere near the crowd around the top-ten names.
Navy
Strengths
- An everyday English word, so it is spelled and pronounced correctly the first time, without a spelling-out routine.
- Two syllables with a strong first beat, which sits easily in front of longer middle and last names.
- Recognizable in every English-speaking country, since the word itself is shared across all of them.
To consider
- The word carries a permanent institutional meaning. Expect the occasional military joke, and know that families with service history may hear the name quite differently from families without it.
- Its use is very recent and rising quickly, which means the name is likely to read as belonging to this particular stretch of years — the way Ashley and Brittany read as belonging to theirs.
- The word is grammatically neutral and does turn up on boys, though US records show it overwhelmingly for girls. Occasional assumptions either way are worth expecting.
