Giana
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Giana is a trimmed spelling of the Italian Gianna, which is itself a short form of Giovanna — the feminine of Giovanni, Italy's John. That means it belongs to one of the largest and oldest name families in Europe, arriving in American records with an Italian sound and a spelling anyone can type on the first try. Two vowels do most of the work, and the whole name resolves in three light syllables.

The story of Giana
The line begins with the Hebrew Yochanan, "Yahweh is gracious," which the Greek translators of scripture rendered Ioannes and Latin carried on as Iohannes. Italian turned it into Giovanni, clipped it affectionately to Gianni, and formed the feminine Giovanna and its short form Gianna. Giana is the same name with one n — a simplified spelling that took hold in the United States, where Italian-American families kept Gianna in circulation through the twentieth century. Its strongest showing is in states with large, long-settled Italian-American populations, which fits that history closely.

Pronouncing Giana
jee-AH-nuh
Soft opening g, as in gem. Italian gives Gianna two syllables, JAH-nah; American speakers usually stretch it to three. With only one n, some readers will also try jee-AN-uh, so expect to correct that occasionally.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Ivette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Giana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ivette climbed just as high around 1991, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ivette's path sketches the road Giana is walking now.
Giana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled, plainly stated meaning — "God is gracious" — with an unbroken documented line back to Hebrew.
- Belongs to a family recognized almost anywhere: Gianna, Giovanna, Juana, Jeanne, Joanna, Jane.
- Ready-made short forms already in real use: Gia, Gigi, Nia.
- Phonetic and short to write, with no silent letters or unusual clusters.
- Gianna, with two n's, is the far more familiar spelling in the US, so Giana will often be written back with the extra letter. Worth deciding early whether that will bother you.
- The pronunciation is not fully fixed in English: jee-AH-nuh, the two-syllable Italian JAH-nah, and jee-AN-uh all get tried. A quick correction usually settles it.
- Gia is such a strong short form that it may end up doing most of the daily work, and it stands alone as a name in its own right.
