The story of Giannah
Gianna Beretta Molla was a paediatrician in Lombardy who died in 1962 after refusing a treatment for her pregnancy that would have ended it; she was canonized in 2004 with her husband and children present, which is unusual. The name was already common in Italy and became far more so afterwards. American use follows the Italian short form rather than the full Giovanna.
Meaning
God is gracious
The feminine of Italian Giovanni, from Hebrew Yohanan through Latin Iohannes. Italian forms the feminine by changing the ending, so Giovanni gives Giovanna and its short form Gianna. The final h is an American addition.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dawnya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Giannah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dawnya climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dawnya's path sketches the road Giannah is walking now.

The trade-off

- Gia and Anna are both complete names sitting inside it.
- A recent, well documented and genuinely admired saint behind it.
- Gianna is the standard spelling and much more common.
- The silent h is invisible aloud and will be dropped constantly.
- The Italian gi is a soft j sound that some readers will harden.
