The story of Jeanne
John was the most-given man's name in medieval Europe, and every language built a feminine on it: Joan and Jane in English, Giovanna in Italian, Juana in Spanish, Johanna in German. Jeanne is the French one. Jeanne d'Arc made it a national name in France, and English-speaking countries borrowed the French spelling rather than translating it, which is why Jeanne and Joan sit side by side in American records. Jeanne peaked in the 1940s.
Meaning
God is gracious
From the Hebrew Yohanan, 'the Lord is gracious', through the Latin Johannes and the French Jean. French forms feminines by adding an e, so Jeanne is Jean with the ordinary feminine ending — the sound changes because the final n is then pronounced.

The Opal test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeanne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Opal climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Opal's path sketches the road Jeanne is walking now.

The trade-off
- A genuine French name with an unbroken record and a national heroine behind it.
- It sits in the largest name family in Europe, so relatives everywhere have a version.
- The spelling is distinctive while the English sound is completely familiar.
- The French and English pronunciations are far apart, and the spelling suggests the French one.
- Jean and Jeanne are homophones in American English, so the spelling has to be given.
