The story of Amie
Amée was a medieval French given name that English took as Amy, and it was in ordinary English use from the thirteenth century. The spelling Amie appears alongside it in medieval and early modern records, which makes it a genuine historical variant rather than a modern respelling. American use of Amie rose with Amy through the 1960s and 1970s and peaked in the mid-1970s.
Meaning
beloved; friend
The French amie means 'friend', feminine, from the Latin amicus. Amy comes from the Old French Amée, 'beloved', the past participle of aimer, from the Latin amare. Both trace to the same Latin family of words about love, arriving at slightly different senses.

The Eleanore test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eleanore climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eleanore's path sketches the road Amie is walking now.
Amie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
