Where it comes from

The story of Amena

Amina was the name of Muhammad's mother, who died when he was six, and the same root gave him the epithet al-Amin, the trustworthy, by which the Meccans knew him before the revelation. The root runs through the whole religious vocabulary — iman is faith, aman is safety, and the amen ending a prayer is the same three consonants. Amena is one of several English spellings.

Meaningscholars disagree

trustworthy, safe

Arabic amina means secure and trustworthy, from the root that gives iman, faith, and amin, the amen said after a prayer. An unrelated Latin amoena, pleasant, is also offered for the English spelling.

Amena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2016, with 44 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amena went to 30 girls in 2025, but Ameena, Ameenah and Amenah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 125, which makes it the 835th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,711 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,858 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 53,576 for Amena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning at the center of a very large religious vocabulary.
  • Ami and Mena are both ready short forms.
  • Every vowel is sounded, so it reads correctly in most languages.
What to consider
  • Amena, Amina and Aminah are all in use and none is dominant in English.
  • The English spelling makes the first vowel look like an a rather than ah.
  • It is close to Amelia and Athena in an American ear.
