Where it comes from

The story of Ameenah

The tradition records al-Amin as a byname current in Mecca before the revelation, earned by a reputation for keeping deposits and settling disputes honestly, and it survives in the accounts of the rebuilding of the Kaaba, where Muhammad is asked to arbitrate. Amina bint Wahb, his mother, died when he was six. The root they share is one of the most productive in the language and reaches far beyond Arabic: the Hebrew amen, said at the end of a prayer, is the same word, meaning something like it is firm or so be it, and it entered Greek, Latin and every European language untranslated. The American figures for Ameenah peak in 1978.

Meaning

Arabic "trustworthy, faithful"

From the root ʾ-m-n, to be secure or trustworthy — the root behind amāna, a trust; īmān, faith; and amīn, trustworthy, which is the source of the word amen in Hebrew, Greek and English. Amina is the feminine of amin. Ameenah is a transliteration marking the long vowel with a doubled e.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ameenah went to 13 girls in 2025, but Ameena, Amena and Amenah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 125, which makes it the 835th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,050 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,858 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Ameenah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
