Where it comes from

The story of Chloey

Greek gods carried epithets naming particular aspects and particular cults, and Demeter had many: Thesmophoros, the lawgiver; Karpophoros, the fruit-bringer; and Chloe, the green shoot, worshipped at a sanctuary on the slope of the Acropolis where a ram was sacrificed in spring. Her daughter's name, Kore, simply means the girl. The word khloe belongs to a small family of Greek color terms covering the yellow-green range, and it gave chlorophyll, the green of leaves, and chlorine, named in 1810 for the color of the gas. The name reached Christian use through Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, where he mentions that he has had news from Chloe's people, and English took it up in the seventeenth century among the pastoral names, alongside Phyllis and Damon.

Meaning

Greek khloe, a young green shoot

Chloey is a spelling of Chloe, from Greek khloe, the first green shoot of a plant, used as an epithet of Demeter in her spring aspect. The same root gives chlorophyll and chlorine, both named for a yellow-green color. Chloe is named in 1 Corinthians as a woman whose household reported to Paul. The peak of this spelling is 2011.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Chloey went to 10 girls in 2025, but Kloey, Khloey and Cloey are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 37, which makes it the 923rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,534 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 43,440 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Chloey itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Greek meaning is precise and attractive.
  • Clo and Coco are both usable short forms.
  • Two syllables with a clear first-syllable stress.
What to consider
  • Chloe is overwhelmingly the standard spelling.
  • The ch will be read as the ch of church by some.
  • The added y is not doing phonetic work.
