The story of Kloey
Greek gods carried cult titles that named particular functions, and Demeter had many: Chloe for the green shoot, Thesmophoros for the lawgiver, Karpophoros for the fruit-bearer. Each title had its own shrine and its own festival, so worshipping Demeter Chloe was a different act from worshipping Demeter Thesmophoros. The name entered English use after the Reformation from the New Testament reference and was taken up by pastoral poetry, which used Chloe as a standard shepherdess name alongside Corin and Phyllis. It became a major American name in the 1990s; the Kloey respelling peaks in 2009.
