The story of Khloey
Longus wrote Daphnis and Chloe in Greek, probably in the second century, and it is one of only five ancient Greek novels to survive complete. Two foundlings are raised by herdsmen on Lesbos, fall in love without understanding what is happening to them, and are eventually restored to their wealthy parents. The book was translated into French in 1559 and into English soon after, and it set the terms for European pastoral: the innocent shepherdess, the singing contest, the countryside as a place of clarity. Every Chloe, Phyllis, Daphne and Amaryllis in seventeenth-century English verse descends from that tradition. The name also appears in Paul's letter to Corinth, where Chloe's people bring him news, and that is the only thing known about her.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
