The story of Jettie
Whitby jet is fossilized wood, light, warm to the touch and black enough to take a mirror polish. When Victoria went into mourning for Albert in 1861 and stayed there, the court's dress rules required black ornament, and the Yorkshire town's workshops grew from a handful of craftsmen to a trade employing well over a thousand people. Jet jewelry became the visible mark of bereavement across the English-speaking world for a generation, and the word became the standard English term for the deepest black. A girl named Jettie in the 1880s carried a word that everyone around her associated with polished stone and mourning dress, and also, in most families, a familiar form of a longer name such as Henrietta.

Greek lithos gagates, stone of Gagas
Jettie is most plausibly a diminutive of Henrietta or Jettie as a pet form of names ending in -etta. The word jet, the black stone, comes through Old French from Greek gagates, named after a town in Asia Minor. Which source a nineteenth-century family had in mind cannot be recovered. The peak is 1888.
