The story of Fidelia
Fidelio was first staged in 1805, revised twice and finished in 1814, and it belongs to the rescue-opera genre the French Revolution produced. Its plot turns on a disguise and on the name that goes with it: Leonore, searching for her imprisoned husband, takes work at the jail as a boy called Fidelio, and the name states what she is doing while concealing who she is. Beethoven wanted the opera called Leonore and the theater insisted on the alias, so the work is known by the false name rather than the true one. Fidelia is the ordinary Latin feminine of the same word, and it was in use in English and Spanish naming long before the opera, part of a small set including Constance, Prudence and Verity that took Latin abstractions directly.
