Bertrada, Charlemagne's mother, is Berthe au Grand Pied in the French chansons, and Bertha became a standard name across Germanic and Romance Europe. Italian, Spanish, Hungarian and Polish all use Berta. Emigration brought it to America, where it ran alongside the English Bertha and peaked around 1918.

Meaning

Berta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1927, with 130 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent, undisputed and attractive.
  • It is standard across Italian, Spanish, Hungarian and Polish without change.
  • Charlemagne's mother carries the parent form.
What to consider
  • Bertha is much the commoner form in English records.
  • The Bert clipping reads as masculine.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the early twentieth century.
