Cloey

Feminine · “green shoot”

Chloe means the first green of spring. The Greek khloe named the young shoot coming up out of the ground, and it was a title of Demeter — the goddess of grain worshipped under that name for exactly the moment the crop appears. Cloey drops the h, which turns a Greek letter combination into an ordinary English c and makes the name readable at a glance.

Where it comes from

The story of Cloey

Chloe appears in the New Testament as a woman in Corinth whose household reported a quarrel to Paul, which is how the name reached Christian use. English Protestants took it up, and it became a pastoral name in seventeenth-century poetry — the standard name for a shepherdess. Modern use is much larger: Chloe became one of the most-given girls' names in the English-speaking world in the last thirty years. Cloey is the respelling that removes the Greek h, and its record rose sharply through the 2000s.

Meaning

green shoot; young verdure

From the Greek khloe, the fresh green growth of a plant. It was used as an epithet of Demeter in her aspect as the goddess of the sprouting crop, and it is the root behind chlorophyll — the green in leaves — which is a neat piece of continuity.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cloey went to 5 girls in 2025, but Kloey, Chloey and Khloey are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 37, which makes it the 923rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,019 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 43,440 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Cloey itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The ending removes the ambiguity that the standard spelling carries for anyone unfamiliar with it.
  • The Greek word behind it is vivid, seasonal and connected to chlorophyll.
  • Five letters, two syllables, and readable on sight.
  • Spanish uses Cloe without the h too, so the simplification is not only American.
What to consider
  • Chloe is far commoner and will be written instead on nearly everything.
  • Dropping the h removes the visible Greek origin from the page.
  • The name family is currently very heavily used, so a girl will meet many near-namesakes.
