Where it comes from

The story of Dorsey

Norman surnames often carry their preposition with them: a family from Orsay became d'Orsay and then, once English speakers stopped hearing the join, simply Dorsey. The same thing happened to Disney, which is d'Isigny, and to Danvers, which is d'Anvers. Meanwhile in Ireland an entirely separate family, the Ó Dorchaidhe, had their name written down by English clerks who reached for the nearest familiar shape, and that shape was Dorsey too. In the twentieth century the surname became briefly unavoidable in America, because two brothers from a Pennsylvania coal town each led a famous dance band, quarreled loudly, split up, played against each other for a decade and then made it up on the radio.

Meaningscholars disagree

from Orsay, or else descended from the dark one

On the French reading the name is d'Orsay, from a place outside Paris, with the preposition fused onto the front the way it is in Danvers and Disney. On the Irish reading it anglicizes Ó Dorchaidhe, built on the word for dark. Both families exist, both reached America, and a given Dorsey may come from either.

Dorsey sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1931, with 25 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dorsey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight by everyone and never needs spelling out loud.
  • Two documented family histories stand behind it, one Norman and one Irish, and either is a real answer.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
  • It reads as a surname to most people, which some families like and others find cold.
  • The musical association belongs to one generation and means nothing at all to the next.
