Where it comes from

The story of Lisandra

Lyein means to loosen, untie or release, and English has borrowed its derivatives across half a dozen fields. Analysis is ana-lysis, a loosening-up, the taking apart of something into its components, and it entered English as a term of logic and mathematics before it reached anything else. Paralysis is a loosening beside, the failure of one side of the body. Catalysis is a loosening-down, a substance that helps something come apart. Hydrolysis, electrolysis, dialysis and lysosome all use it. In Greek the same verb covers releasing a prisoner, ending a war, and dissolving an assembly. So the name says something closer to the one who sets men free than to any of the modern technical senses, and the Spartan who bore it ended a twenty-seven-year war.

Meaning

Greek lyein and aner, loosener of men

Lisandra is the Spanish and Italian feminine of Lysander, Greek Lysandros, joining lyein, to loosen, free or release, to aner, andros, a man. The Spartan admiral Lysander, who defeated Athens in 405 BC, is the best known bearer. Shakespeare gave the name to a lover in A Midsummer Night's Dream. The American peak is 2010.

About 1 girl in 73,058 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Lisandra itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
