The story of Venecia
The mainland cities of the Veneto were sacked repeatedly in the fifth and sixth centuries, and their populations withdrew to the islands and sandbanks of the lagoon, which were defensible precisely because they were useless: too shallow for ships, too soft for cavalry, and navigable only by people who knew the channels. What began as a refuge became permanent. The settlements federated, elected a doge from the eighth century, built on piles driven into the mud, and turned the disadvantage into a commercial empire based on salt, shipping and the Byzantine trade. The Republic lasted until Napoleon extinguished it in 1797. It is a rare case of a major European power founded not by conquest but by people running away, and the geography that saved them dictated everything the city became.

The Corinda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Venecia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Corinda climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Corinda's path sketches the road Venecia is walking now.
Venecia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
