Lania
Feminine
The -ia at the end of a country's name is Latin, and it is still making new countries. Tanzania was assembled in 1964 out of Tanganyika and Zanzibar with that ending stuck on the front half. Latin grammar is quietly at work in the atlas.

Where it comes from
From Lana to Lania
Our story of Lania
The Latin suffix -ia formed abstract nouns and territorial names, and Europe applied it wholesale: Britannia, Hispania, Gallia, Germania, Italia, Dalmatia, Arabia. It went on working long after Latin stopped being spoken. Colombia was coined in the nineteenth century from Columbus, Bolivia from Bolivar, Rhodesia from Rhodes, Liberia from liber, free. Australia is the southern land with the ending attached. And it is still productive: Tanzania was made in 1964 by taking the first syllables of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and finishing with -ia, and the name was chosen from a public competition. The same ending sits on hundreds of American girls' names, where it does the same job it does on a country: it makes an ordinary word or stem sound like a formal, established thing with a history behind it.

Not established
Lania has no inherited etymology. It is most likely built on Lana, itself a shortening of Alana or Svetlana, with the Latinate -ia ending, or on the Hawaiian lani, sky. Neither derivation is documented for the American name. The peak is 2005.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lania went to 10 girls in 2025, but Laniyah, Laniya and Laniah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 143, which makes it the 817th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,640 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 11,240 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Lania itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
