The -ee at the end of employee, divorcee, refugee and fiancee is a French past participle. English borrowed it attached to those words and then made it productive on its own, so a payee is the one paid and an addressee the one addressed. A foreign ending became an English grammatical tool.

Where it comes from

The story of Amee

French past participles ending in -e came into English attached to nouns describing a person something had been done to: an employe was one who had been employed, a divorce one who had been divorced, a refugie one who had taken refuge, a fiance one who had been promised. English kept the ending, dropped the accent, and then began forming new words with it on native and Latin stems: payee, addressee, trainee, appointee, nominee, escapee, standee. The suffix acquired a clear grammatical meaning it does not have in French, marking the recipient of an action against the -er that marks the doer, so employer and employee, payer and payee. Amy sits at the head of that borrowing, an ordinary French participle that reached England as a name in the twelfth century, long before the grammatical suffix followed.

Meaning

Latin amata, beloved

Amee is a spelling of Amy, from Old French Amee, the feminine past participle of amer, to love, from Latin amata, beloved. The name therefore means loved rather than loving. The modern French form is Aimee. The doubled e in this spelling writes the same sound as the y in Amy. The peak is 1975.

Amee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1976, with 87 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
