Cammie

The English-speaking world calls her Camille, and that is not her name. In Dumas's novel and play the heroine is Marguerite Gautier; Camille is the title the English adaptations used, from the camellias she carries, and it stuck to the woman instead.

The story of Cammie
Alexandre Dumas fils published La Dame aux Camelias in 1848 and staged it in 1852; the heroine is Marguerite Gautier, a courtesan who wears white camellias twenty-five days a month and red for the other five. Verdi turned it into La Traviata in 1853, renaming her Violetta. English-language productions of the play were billed as Camille, after the flowers, and audiences took the title for the character's name; Garbo's 1936 film is called Camille and the character in it is Marguerite. So a woman known to the entire English-speaking world by one name is called something else in every version of her own story. The camellia itself is named after Georg Kamel, a Moravian Jesuit botanist who worked in the Philippines, and has nothing to do with the Latin name Camilla.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
