Cameron is a nose. The Gaelic phrase cam sròn means crooked nose, and it was a nickname given to a chief before it became the name of a Highland clan and, eventually, one of the most-used unisex names in America. Kammie is the affectionate form of that, dressed in two ordinary American conventions: a k where a c would be, and a doubled consonant to keep the vowel short.

How old is the name Kammie?

Kammie first appears in US birth records in 1958 — 67 years ago. The typical Kammie alive today was born around 1987, making them about 38 years old. About 900 people named Kammie are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Kammie most popular?

Kammie peaked in 1965, reaching #2538 nationally. Today it ranks #13208, 10,670 places below that high. See the whole 1965 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Kammie

Clan Cameron takes its name from the nickname, and the clan chiefs have carried it for centuries; the surname reached America with Scottish emigration and became a first name in the twentieth century, first for boys and then, unusually thoroughly, for girls as well. Short forms followed. The k-and-double-m spelling belongs to mid-century American naming, which used both devices constantly to mark a short form as a chosen name rather than a casual clipping. Kammie appears in the record from the 1950s.

Meaningscholars disagree

crooked nose

If the name shortens Cameron, the Gaelic behind it is cam sròn, crooked nose — an ordinary and unflattering nickname of the kind that produced a great many Highland surnames. If it shortens Camille or Camilla instead, the source is the Latin camilla, a child who assisted at religious rites. Both are plausible for an American Kammie.

Kammie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kammie went to 6 girls in 2025, but Cammie, Camie and Kamie are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 27, which makes it the 933rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,275 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 59,528 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Kammie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The doubled m fixes the vowel, which the single-consonant spellings leave open.
  • Kam works as a short form and suits a child of either sex.
  • The Gaelic nickname behind it is documented, concrete and slightly comic, which children enjoy.
What to consider
  • Cammie, Cami and Kami are all commoner and will be written instead.
  • As a given name it reads as a nickname, and a woman will be asked what it is short for.
  • It belongs to a mid-century American generation and carries that flavor.
