Kamie
Feminine · “a young attendant at a rite”
Kamie is a short form that stopped needing a long one. Behind it stand Camille and Camilla, and behind those a Roman word that was a job title before it was a name: a camilla was a girl who assisted at a religious rite, carrying the vessels. The K and the -ie are American adjustments to a name that has been in Europe for two thousand years.

The story of Kamie
Camilla owes its afterlife to a poem. Virgil's warrior is one of the most vivid figures in the Aeneid, and Renaissance readers took the name out of the text and gave it to their daughters; French made it Camille and used it for men and women both. American families received Camille, shortened it to Cammie and Kami, and then did what happens to every good short form — began giving it on its own, with no long name behind it. The K is the ordinary American substitution for a hard C, and the -ie ending belongs to the same period. Neither changes the sound, and neither has anything to do with Rome.

a young attendant at a rite
Roman writers use camillus and camilla for a freeborn boy or girl who served a priest during a sacrifice, and the word appears to be older than Latin — it may have come in from Etruscan, which would put it beyond recovery. Virgil then gave the name to a warrior woman in the Aeneid, a Volscian queen who fights on the losing side, and that character is the reason the name survived at all. So the word has a documented use and an unrecoverable root, which is a common combination in very old names.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kamie went to 5 girls in 2025, but Cammie, Camie and Kammie are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 27, which makes it the 933rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,009 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 59,528 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Kamie itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dorothye test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kamie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dorothye climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dorothye's path sketches the road Kamie is walking now.
Kamie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables and five letters, easy to say and easy to remember on first hearing.
- It has a genuine classical name behind it if a longer formal version is ever wanted.
- Kam works as a short form and is one of the few that suits either child.
- The first vowel can be read long or short from this spelling, and both readings are in use, so it will be said two ways.
- Kami, Kammie, Cami and Cammie are all in the record and all sound like this one, so the spelling gets dictated constantly.
- It reads as a nickname, and anyone who wants a formal option will have to supply Camille themselves.
