Annetta
Feminine · “Hebrew channah”
English borrowed the French diminutive -ette and then gave it two jobs French never had. A usherette and a majorette are female, not small. A leatherette and a flannelette are imitations. The suffix arrived meaning little and left meaning woman or fake.

The story of Annetta
In French and Italian the suffix does one job: it makes something smaller or fonder. Une maisonnette is a little house, una casetta the same. English borrowed it in hundreds of words and then extended it in two directions the source languages never took. First to mark a female version of a male role, giving usherette, majorette, suffragette and drum majorette, a use that is now dated and was resented at the time by some of the women it described. Second to mark a substitute material, giving leatherette, flannelette, kitchenette in part, and satinette. Both extensions treat the diminutive as marking something lesser, which is the same drift that turned -ling from duckling into underling. French speakers meeting suffragette find it merely odd; English speakers meeting maisonnette have quietly reinterpreted it as a kind of flat.
