Delphia
Feminine · “Greek delphys”
Adelphos, the Greek for brother, literally means from the same womb: a copulative prefix plus delphys, a womb. Philadelphia is brotherly love built on that word, so the city's name says, at the root, love of those born of the same mother.

The story of Delphia
Greek forms its word for a sibling out of shared origin rather than shared parentage in the abstract: a-delphos, with the a of togetherness rather than negation, plus delphys, the womb, so a brother is one from the same womb. That makes adelphos a more precise word than English brother, which says nothing about how the relationship arises. Philadelphia, the ancient city in Asia Minor named for a king called Philadelphos, brother-loving, gave William Penn his name for the Pennsylvania settlement in 1682. Delphi may share the root, and the ancient explanations connect it either to the womb or to the dolphin, which is delphis, itself probably named for its shape. The English word dolphin therefore may be a cousin of the word for a brother, through an anatomical resemblance nobody now finds obvious.

Greek delphys, womb
Delphia is most likely a shortening of Philadelphia, from philos, loving, and adelphos, brother, itself from a copulative prefix and delphys, a womb. It may equally derive from Delphi, the oracular site, whose name is also connected to delphys or to delphis, a dolphin. Neither is settled. The American peak is 1893.
